I checked out the new gigantic E-mart Town in Ilsan yesterday with my boyfriend and was very impressed with the selection. The store it so big that it didn’t feel crowded on a Saturday. (A rare occurrence in a shopping area in Korea The closest subway stations are Juyeop 주엽역 and Daehwa 대화역. Here’s the website where a map can be found.
We only wandered around the basement level and the first floor. The basement is a warehouse-style store similar to Costco, but without the membership card. The only thing preventing me from buying anything was the fact that I didn’t have a car to take it home.
I was most surprised by the coconut products. I love everything that comes from a coconut. I’m in love with the coco.
Coconut flour, coconut oil, coconut sugar.
Coconut flour is a grain-free, high fibre flour that can be used in baking. In Canada, I’ve tried a simple bread and pancakes with this flour and had excellent results.
Coconut oil is an all-purpose staple in my home. It has both beauty and culinary uses. It’s a great moisturiser, eye make-up remover, and facial cleanser. For cooking, this oil is great for frying because it has a high heat tolerance. The healthy fats will not oxidize, so the quality of fats remain intact. There are so many uses for coconut oil that you can read more about here. My favourite uses are as a face wash/eye make-up remover, for oil pulling, and cooking.
Coconut sugar is made from the sap of the coconut plant. The collected sap is heated for the liquid to evaporate, resulting in coconut sugar granules. It is not quite as bad for your health as regular white sugar, so if it being used sparingly, it would be a better substitution.
P.S. One of my pet peeves are when products are listed as “gluten free” when they didn’t have gluten to begin with. Gluten free has become a buzzword and a marketing gimmick ! ugh
