What’s in your makeup? Check out EWG.org

Today I want to share with you a website that has been a tremendous resource for me. While studying holistic nutrition we learned not just about the best food for our bodies, but also how our environments impact our health. The air we breathe, the products we clean with, and the lotions we put on our skin all impact us in some way. Even the electromagnetic frequencies from electronics influence how our bodies work. It’s pretty scary stuff! Learning this information really motivated me to change my lifestyle. I felt inspired to make my own all-purpose house cleaner and even my own body lotion. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t unnecessarily exposing myself to something harmful.

One analogy that was taught to us at nutrition school was “The Barrel Effect.” Basically, our body is the barrel. Toxins that we are exposed to – whether it is from our food, the air or cosmetics – enters our bodies. They must become detoxified. This is done in various ways. Our livers filter our blood, we have an immune system to fend off foreign invaders, we can sweat and pee and poo. All of these processes allow us to handle any toxins coming in and to remove them. The real problems comes when we become over-exposed. Our “barrel” becomes full and our bodies can no longer eliminate the toxins coming in. This is when we begin to feel the symptoms. For example, we can feel like we have very low energy, develop skin conditions or even become seriously ill.

The good news is that there is this phenomenal website called the Environmental Working Group. This site has everything!

  • Food ratings
  • Cosmetics guides
  • Cleaning products
  • GMOs
  • Water Filters
  • and much more!

It’s full of advice that is easy for anyone to incorporate into their lives. Here’s some examples of articles on their site.

EWG also has an application for mobile devices called Skin Deep. It is able to scan barcodes of various products and provides a report. There are over 80,000 products in the database. I’ve tried it for some Korean cosmetics brands. They are not all available but I encourage you to scan anyways. This is a way to introduce new products to the developers so that a report will be able to be generated for the future.

Here’s a sample report of the BB cream I am currently using. You can see that it doesn’t have the best rating. The products listed as hazardous are actually pretty common ingredients in cosmetics. I’m looking to switch but haven’t been able to find much information on Korean brands yet. I need to find something! Any recommendations?

And the second product I scanned was a face mask by Andalou Organics. I love this company because all of the ingredients are naturally sourced. It is possible to make great products without harmful chemicals.

I’m going to warn you that once you start scanning your beauty products, it can become a bit emotional. But, you can use the application when purchasing replacement products to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want. Being aware of what is in our food, beauty products and household cleaners is the first step in making a change. Even switching just a few products for a cleaner alternative is making a difference. Just start making changes slowly 🙂
